26 Jun 09 Fight to save dying Michael Jackson

0669045900

THIS is the last picture of pop king Michael Jackson, taken shortly before his untimely death today, and one which sparked a bidding war on news networks in the US.

ET online.com was the first to publish the picture, taken as paramedics fought desperately to save the star after he suffered an apparent cardiac arrest.

It’s believed the network forked out more than US $100,000 for the single shot, destined to become the final photo in the life of the superstar.

Jackson was pronounced dead today after paramedics found him in a coma following a panic-stricken phone call from the superstar’s Los Angeles mansion.

The dramatic call was made by a member of staff early today at 2:26pm (7.26am Sydney time)

Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Steve Ruda responded to the alert and arrived at the home in Carolwood Drive off Sunset Boulevard to find the 50-year-old singer collapsed and not breathing. He had suffered a cardiac arrest.

The paramedics performed CPR and took him to UCLA Medical Center, Ruda said. The emergency staff rushed him to hospital in their vehicle, where a computer screen revealed chilling details of his condition.

A record of the call-out read: “50 year old male Not breathing at all.” It gave the time of the call- out as 12.21pm local time.

Medics administered heart massage and oxygen along the route. But they could not revive the star.
Jacko’s family were informed and rushed to his bedside as weeping fans began massing outside the city’s UCLA Medical Centre.

There were screams of “You’ve got to save him, you’ve got to save him” as the star was stretchered in.

Mum Katherine made it to the hospital shortly after her son, although his father Joe was in Las Vegas when told the news. Close friend Elizabeth Taylor also rushed to the hospital to say her goodbyes.

Finally a doctor appeared and told shocked relatives and aides that all efforts to restart his heart had failed and that he had died.

Sister La Toya was seen running into the hospital sobbing after her brother was pronounced dead.

Los Angeles County Coroner Fred Corell today confirmed that Jackson had died of heart failure at 2.26pm local time.

Law enforcement sources told the LA Times that Los Angeles Police Department robbery-homicide detectives have opened an investigation into the death, though they stressed there is no evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

The detectives plan to interview relatives, friends and Jackson’s doctors to try to figure out what happened. The L.A. County coroner’s office will determine a cause of death.

It’s been revealed today Jackson was taking prescription drugs as he battled to get into shape for his gruelling concert comeback due to get underway in London next month.

Jackson, who fought long-running battles with prescription medication throughout his career, was taking the drugs after suffering injuries during training for his comeback, lawyer and spokesman Brian Oxman said.

Oxman told CNN that he had harboured concerns about Jackson’s use of drugs, saying members of the star’s entourage were “enablers” and comparing his case to the drug overdose death of Playboy centrefold Anna-Nicole Smith.

“This is not something that has been unexpected… because of the medications which Michael was under,” Oxman said from the hospital where Jackson’s family members had gathered.

“The people who have surrounded him have been enabling him… if you think that the case of Anna-Nicole Smith was an abuse, it was nothing to what we have seen in Michael Jackson’s life.”

Jackson’s brother Jermaine Jackson cautioned at a Los Angeles hospital press conference  that the cause of his death would not be known until an autopsy was performed.

Jackson rented the Bel-Air home - described as a French chateau built in 2002 with seven bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, 12 fireplaces and a theater - for $100,000 a month.

Jackson has three children – sons Prince Michael 7, and Michael Joseph Jackson Jr., 12, and daughter Paris Michael Katherine, 11.

The news comes as Jackson was attempting a comeback after years of tabloid headlines, most notably about his trial and acquittal on child molestation charges.

24 Jun 09 Celebs Design Havaianas for Charity

Yesterday, there was Beckham mania for the launch of the Emporio Armani Underwear Fall/Winter 09/10 campaign, but Selfridges London has also reached out to charities for its centennial celebration.

After setting up a Havaianas (Brazil’s best export after supermodels) customization pop-up shop, the British retailer has invited celebrities and designers, such as Paul Smith, Alek Wek, Jade Jagger and Lulu Guiness to join in on the DIY fun by designing their own pair of flip flops.

Starting June 15 until midnight on June 26 (London time), you can bid on the fashionable one of a kind footwear via a silent auction on Selfridges’ website. All proceeds will go to CLIC Sargent, a charity that supports children with cancer.

With designs completely up to interpretation, the sandals range from the zany, such as Matthew Williamson‘s bejeweled barnacles fiasco, to the artsy, like Basso & Brooke‘s origami inspired pair.

But if art is a reflection of its creator, then Naomi Campbell’s design is right on point. The supermodel transformed the lowly flip flop into a killer stiletto.

22 Jun 09 2 Ill. Soldiers Killed In Afghanistan

Two Illinois soldiers have died in Afghanistan after their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device in Kandahar, according to the Illinois Army National Guard.

Twenty-six-year-old Staff Sgt. Joshua Melton of Germantown and 43-year-old Sgt. Paul Smith of East Peoria died Friday, according to the national guard. Two other soldiers in the vehicle were injured.

It was Melton’s second deployment after serving with Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2004 to 2006. He graduated from Central Community High School in Breese in 2001 and enlisted in the Illinois Army National Guard in November 2000.

Melton was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 130th Infantry based in Marion.

Smith graduated from East Peoria Community High School in 1984 and enlisted in the Guard in April 1993. It was his third deployment, and he was in Iraq from 2003 to 2004 and from 2005 to 2006.

Smith was with Troop C, 2nd Battalion, 106th Cavalry based in Aurora.

Both soldiers had been in Afghanistan since October.

“Staff Sgt. Melton and Sgt. Smith were true patriots, answering the call to duty and supporting their fellow Soldiers during multiple deployments,” said Maj. Gen. William Enyart, adjutant general of the Illinois National Guard. “They are remarkable, devoted Soldiers who will always be our heroes.”

No funeral arrangements have been announced.

22 Jun 09 Paul Smith accepts the Queen’s Award for Enterprise

Paul Smith is pleased to accept the Queens Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category this year. The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are the UK’s most prestigious awards for business performance. They recognise and reward outstanding achievement by UK companies. The Awards are made each year by The Queen, on the advice of the Prime Minister, who is assisted by an Advisory Committee that includes representatives of Government, industry and commerce, and the trade unions

“We are obviously delighted and honoured to receive this award. We are pleased to say that our business around the world still continues to grow even during these more difficult financial times.” Paul Smith

The award for International Trade recognises companies that have demonstrated growth in overseas earnings. Over the past six years Paul Smith has seen group turnover increase from £77m to £150m and has more than doubled export sales from the UK where it employs over 630 staff.

Paul Smith’s introduction into fashion was completely accidental. At the age of 16, with no career plans or qualifications, Paul Smith was propelled by his father into a menial job at the local clothing warehouse in his native Nottingham. However his real passion was sport and his ambition was to become a professional racing cyclist, until aged 17 years when cycling mad Paul was in a terrible accident.

19 Jun 09 Smith’s Progress

Everybody should really be paying attention to all the fantastic degree shows going on over the next couple of weeks – tonight is the Royal Academy show – my tip for that one is Jack Newling. He’s worth looking out for – he won the Paul Smith scholarship at the Royal Academy School. But also look out for the graduate shows at Saint Martins  and the Royal College of Art – go on to the various websites for all the information.

Did you read about my bunny rabbit, too? The Super Contemporary exhibition at the Design Museum has been really popular – it’s great for people who are really into design. Apart from the 15 designers who have done special things for it, one of the nicest things is the timeline on the wall outside the room. It starts at 1960 and it goes up to the present day – showing the massive amount of creativity that has come out of London .

For music, at the moment I’m really into Florence and the Machine’s new single Rabbit Heart – it’s really good, you should definitely hear it.

Other news this week is that I just won the Queen’s Award for Export which I am really proud of – these days 52 per cent of our clothes go abroad and we have doubled our turnover of export in the last five years – I didn’t meet the Queen this time but I’m very proud of having won it.

And lastly, if anyone is wandering past our Albemarle Street shop, we have this amazing alabaster street light – it’s definitely worth popping in to see it. It’s carved from a single block of alabaster. It came from one of our dealers – I can’t tell you where, it would be giving away secrets…

18 Jun 09 The Big Bag Project

PAUL SMITH’S new Project 10 initiative, which will be showcased at the Design Museum from next week, is massive and, at the same time, exclusive.

Smith has created 138 different designs which will all appear on one bag shape; the flight bag. Despite the seemingly huge number of styles, only 10 of each will be created, resulting in an offering that is covetable and collectable. Graphic prints, stripes, spots and logos adorn the classic shape, all of which will be gathered together for the Design Museum’s showcase.

The number 138 is not meaningless either,it corresponds to the number of Paul Smith stores there are in Japan where the bag will retail, which means that each store will carry only one style and only 10 pieces of each creating a style cult individual to each store.

“I wanted to show that creativity is not just driven by money or commerciality and that it can be about a simple idea and effort,” Paul Smith revealed. “Designing 138 prints at the same time for one project was both extremely challenging and rewarding at the same time. I wanted to give and show something interesting and unique to the customer, and hopefully we have achieved that.”

17 Jun 09 Fury as yobs ruin shelter

Arsonists who destroyed a shelter for teenagers in Leabrooks have been branded ‘morons’ and ‘pond life’.
The teen shelter on the Sherwood Street recreation ground was burned down at about 11pm on Sunday night and a large group of youngsters were seen in the area at the time.

Councillors who worked hard to raise funds for the shelter to be built and maintained for the last 12 years are furious and have offered a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Cllr John McCabe, who represents Somercotes on Amber Valley Borough Council, said: “I am absolutely disgusted and dismayed that someone would want to set fire to a teen shelter.

“They are absolute morons – pond life who do not deserve anything. Somercotes Leisure Development Group will provide an award for the conviction or arrest of the culprits.

“Along with my colleagues Cllrs Paul Smith and Bryan Lyttle and the development group, we are working tirelessly to provide good resources for the community. This is a kick in the teeth for the whole community. If you know who they are, shop them.”

County councillor Paul Smith said: “It is absolutely disgraceful. This was developed years ago to give the young people something to do, they have destroyed something that is theirs.

“This will have been used by a lot of children growing up in the area, possibly even the people that torched it.

“We now have to decide whether it is worth putting back but it looks as though it will have to be completely removed. There have been problems with noise and drinking and this could be the final straw for the people who live around the recreation ground.

“I’m hoping that some young people who are as angry about this as we are will come forward and tell us who is responsible. Calls will be treated in strict confidence.”

A spokesman for Derbyshire Police said the force has received reports of the fire at about 11pm.

“Witnesses reported seeing a large group of lads and girls in the area at the time but could not give any descriptions.

“The police helicopter went up and we are continuing to investigate,” he added.
